Founded in 1946 by the anthropologist Gaetano Pieraccini and Paolo Graziosi, anthropologist and paleontologist, the museum and its collections were opened to the public in 1975. Exhibits cover the Italian prehistoric era, work by Italian explorers and scholars from Africa, Asia and America, and an exhibition on prehistoric Italian art.
