Florence - Piazza della Reppublica

Once you´ve said that it´s big and that the numerous cafes make it a popular meeting place, then you´ve just about got the measure of this square. The inscription above the vast western arch claims that the ancient and squalid city centre was given new life with this square, created at the end of the last century.
Once the site of the Roman forum, the area became the city’s central market, and in 1430 Donatello produced a statue of Abundance that sat atop a column in the middle of the stalls. Today’s statue is a replica, erected in 1956.
