Florence - San Lorenzo and the Medici chapels

| The origins of the church date back to the fourth century and for a long time it was the city´s cathedral. San Lorenzo was the Medici family´s parish church, and the present building was commissioned by Cosimo the elder. Begun by Brunelleschi in 1419, it was the first `Renaissance church´ and the stark facade is not at all representative of the interior. |
| The adjacent Medici chapels (Cappella dei Principi
and the Sagrestia Nuova) are two very different affairs. The former is
entered upon leaving the Medici crypt, and is as loud an example of Medici
`if you´ve got it flaunt it´ thinking as you´ll find anywhere. It is the latter chapel that people come to see; begun in 1520, it was designed by Michelangelo, and contains his Dawn and Dusk and Night and Day figures on the Medici tombs. Click here for some images. |
