Florence - Santa Croce

Piazza Santa Croce has always been one of the main areas for important ceremonies and festivals in Florence, and it is still home to the traditional `ancient football´ contest held annually between the quarters of the town. Rugby with mediaeval costume and added aggression comes close to describing it.
The church is the final resting place of Michelangelo, Machiavelli and Galileo amongst many others. The facade and bell tower only date back to the last century, but the church itself was begun at the end of the thirteenth century. Be sure to see the numerous chapels, particularly the Cappella Peruzzi and the Cappella Bardi with their Giotto Frescoes, with Brunelleschi´s Cappella dei Pazzi being considered one of his finest works.

The district of Santa Croce was one of the worst hit by the disastrous floods of 1966, and the Museo dell´Opera di Santa Croce houses what became one of the symbols of the desperate havoc - the Crucifixion by Cimabue.
