Often left behind in the headlong rush from the
station to the `names´ in the city centre, this church is well worth a
detour. Begun in 1268, the church was at one time the base of the Dominican
order in Florence. The interior is notable for the lengthened perspective
effect (caused by a closer spacing of the columns towards the altar),
and a great amount of decoration and detail.
There are pieces by Masaccio, Lippi, Ghirlandaio and Brunelleschi, whilst
the adjacent museum, housed in the Romanesque cloisters, is home to yet
more exceptional paintings. |
