A lively, bustling town, Pescara has 16 kms of beach, and ferries over to Croatia and the islands lying off the Dalmation coast. There are designer boutiques on the Corso Umberto, Pescara’s main street, and there are chic cafes on the Piazza Rinascita.
The town of Chieti is smaller and quieter than Pescara. Arriving at Chieti’s Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, you quickly come to the cathedral and thence to the main street, Corso Marrucini. There is an excellent museum, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Abruzzo. This treasure trove, lying amidst parkland, contains Roman remains, Bronze Age statues, weaponry and jewellery.
Travelling down this stretch of Abruzzo coast you’ll find endless stretches of sand, dotted with little resorts, and finally the old city of Vasto.
