The Cinque Terre, Liguria, Italy

cinque terre, 5 terre

The Cinque Terre cling for dear life to this narrow coastal strip, but there is nothing grim about this situation, indeed the villages are a multicoloured swatch of stuccoed buildings, threaded through with narrow mediaeval passages that have never known motorised traffic. These are lively fishing villages, full of life and, frankly, full of tourists, but who cares? - enjoy a delicious lunch in one of the seafood restaurants, (st)roll down to the waterfront and catch a boat along to the next village.

If your time is limited and you need to cherrypick then do be sure to visit Monterosso and Vernazza. Monterosso is the largest of the Cinque Terre, and nods to this century by actually having vehicles (not many though), and Vernazza is a joy with its long main drag and sea-front trattorie.
