Capo Vaticano belongs to the Comune di Ricadi, an important centre for tourism but far from overwhelmed by it. It has a number of the region’s most popular beaches, including Tonicello and Grotticelle, but though these are very popular they are expansive enough for you never to feel crowded.

And there is plenty to see in the area around. As well as being perfectly placed for Calabria’s main airport (Lamezia is just a few miles to the north) there is much to explore. The main town on this stretch of Tyrrhenian Coast, Tropea, is delightfully pretty, a charming little seaside resort. There is a fine Norman cathedral, and the views from the upper part of the town over the sea and the Church of Santa Maria dell’Isola are quite magnifcent.
