You’ll love discovering this southernmost tip of Italy (forming the toe of the ‘boot’ that strikes Sicily in the Mediterranean). Calabria is the essence of the mezzogiorno and correspondingly unspoiled by mass tourism. The nearby Tropea promontory has everything: white sandy beaches, clear azure waters, and hills that reach right down to the sea. And in the towns of Pizzo and Tropea it has two of the most fascinating and charming settlements in the area. There is great food to be had here, with a menu still heavily influenced by Greek cuisine, with swordfish, aubergine and honey-based desserts featuring.

Tropea is possibly the prettiest town on the southern Tyrrhenian coast, a lovely seaside resort. There is a Norman Cathedral, great views of the sea from the upper town, and there’s a fascinating museum dedicated to Calabrian trades and crafts. And Capo Vaticano has probably the best beaches in the area, including Tonicello and Groticelle.
