Positano itself is a gem. With its houses clinging to the precipitous cliffside above crystal clear waters, it lies on the Sorrento Peninsula, which itself divides two of Italy’s most beautiful bays, the Bay of Naples and the Bay of Salerno. Fifty years ago it was a little-known village. Then author John Steinbeck came, built a villa and changed all that. It was at the hub of the Dolce Vita of the fifties and sixties, and today it’s a magnet to rock stars, actors and other celebrities. Yet despite that, the village is remarkably unspoiled.

And once you head out from Positano, you’ll find not just must-visit tourist spots such as Capri and Ischia, but a whole region – Campania – which is one of the most beautiful in Italy. And with so much to see – Naples, Pompeii, Sorrento and more, you won’t tire of exploring. [ map of Campania ]
