Hotel Villa Bellavista is located in the centre of Praiano, a pretty town on the Amalfi Coast just south of Naples. The setting is breathtaking — one of the most beautiful coastlines in Europe, a land of rocky cliffs and hidden coves, of ancient, unspoilt villages on the edge of the sea. The bay of Praiano is particularly pretty, and has been a popular holiday resort for more than 2000 years.
The hotel lies in a quiet part of town, surrounded by olive groves and sweet scented lemon trees: a wonderfully relaxing place to spend a holiday. The spacious terraces have marvellous views of the sapphire-blue sea and the coastline, stretching out to the distant island of Capri.
There are 20 spacious, sunny rooms, each with a bath or shower, a fan, telephone, television, air conditioning, minibar and a sea-view terrace. The rooms are comfortable and welcoming, brightly and tastefully decorated in a style typical of the Amalfi area. There is a private car park.
The hotel runs excursions to Capri and the beautiful Grotta dello Smeraldo (it has its own boat in the bay) and bus trips to Pompei, Vesuvio and Paestum. Other possible activities include fishing — a real passion in these parts — and diving.
It is hard now to believe that the Amalfi Republic was once one of the world’s superpowers, a nation which invented maritime law and the compass, and dominated the European trade in silks and spices. Hard times and decline arrived with the Normans and the Black Death, but you’ll still see the odd sign of former grandeur — in Amalfi’s strangely arabic cathedral (the Saracens were frequent allies), the Gothic Arsenal and in crumbling watchtowers and fortifications. The days of world domination are over, and this is now a peaceful, sleepy spot with a (slightly crumbled) air of gentility — and ideal for a relaxing Italian holiday.
