Ferrara accommodation - Bed and Breakfast in this historical Italian city.

Le Stanze di Torcicoda

Ferrara accommodation - Emilia-Romagna - Le Stanze di Torcicoda is a comfortable and cosy bed & breakfast located in the old Jewish quarter of the city of Ferrara - in the town centre and very near to the main monuments and museums.

In the old house, restored and furnished in very good taste, you'll find five rooms, all with bathroom, phone, colour satellite TV, fridge-bar, safe and air conditioning. There is parking nearby and there is a fax available.

It is said that in Ferrara people learn to ride a bike before they learn to walk - indeed the figures are that there are three bikes for every inhabitant! Most hotels have bicycles available for their guests, and there are also many places to rent them. The arrival of a car here in the historical centre is therefore a little unusual ... but tolerated for dropping off your luggage.

The small building which houses the bed and breakfast lies not far from the centre, in a very quiet district that has the feel of a village. On the ground floor you find a small kitchen where breakfast is prepared, and a bedroom: due to its proximity to the kitchen this isn't the quietest room in the house. Upstairs, the other bedrooms are lovely: the architecture of the house dictates that they can't be very large, but all are individually decorated with various curios, well maintained and very comfortable. This is a friendly place.

For short stays prices are EURO €63 in single room, €85 in double room and €70 in room with queen size bed. All price are per day, breakfast included.

There is also Il Mercantino, a big antiques fair the first weekend of every month except August.

Lying some 50km north of the city of Bologna, this fascinating little city lies in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy, close to the border with the Veneto. The city peaked during the Renaissance, when it was the fiefdom of the Dukes of Este, who built a tidily beautiful little city and stocked their houses with artworks commissioned from the important painters of the period. The feckless Este went into decline during the 18th century, fled the town and handed control over to the Papacy. Ferrara went into decline and the city became half-deserted, its canals clogged up with silt and rubbish, and mosquitoes assailing visitors.

Today, a restored and reinvigorated Ferrara lies at the hub of the orchards and fruit-producing farms of Emilia-Romagna, a pleasant and prosperous town and unspoiled by rampant tourism. It also has some excellent restaurants - Emilia-Romagna has a well-earned reputation as the home of the most lavish food in Italy (the regional capital to the south is not for nothing known as 'Bologna the Fat'). Parmesan cheese and Parma ham are regional specialities of course, and this is the true home of balsamic vinegar. You'll find the best pasta in the north of Italy, with tortellini stuffed with pork, pumpkin, ricotta cheese and spinach, and a host of meats boiled, spiced, roasted ... all washed down with delicious regional wines such as Albana and Sangiovese.
