TUSCANY DURING AUGUST August is the hottest month of the year and many Italians will take their annual holiday during August. Some businesses are closed for the entire month, others for one or two weeks. Those Tuscans able to do so leave the cities and head for the hills, the islands or the beach. Everything, excepting traffic headed for the beach, slows down, and the Versilian coastline becomes a temple to sunburn. There is a national holiday on the 15th of August and do everything you can to avoid driving that day - it is the busiest day of the year for the Italian road system. |

areas of the city competing in the main square in honour of the Virgin
Mary. |
