'The spas that cured your ancestors'. Good job I'm not easily offended or I might be taking umbrage on behalf of my ancestors. The tablet above dates from 1471 and is proclaimed as being 'the first brochure about Bagni di Lucca'. Findings in the area indicate that the spas here were already important during Ligurian, Lombard, Roman and Etruscan times. By the 12th century the spa was so famous that Countess Matilda of Tuscany took steps to render it more accessible by improvements to various roads and by the construction of the remarkable Devils Bridge. In the 15th century the reputation of the waters and of the bathing establishments was so high as to raise Bagni di Lucca to the same exalted level as the spas at Karlsbad, Spa, Baden (Switzerland), Vichy and Plombieres. Today, the very high therapeutic value of the waters remains incontestable and there are all sorts of treatments, therapies and cures on offer at the main spa (0039 0583 87221). There are three thermal swimming pools for public use. |
