The small hilltop town of Montecarlo is the centre
of a well known wine producing area. The well preserved town centre,
surrounded by fine walls and topped by the fortress, Rocca del Cerruglio,
gives panoramic views of the vines and plains below.

| Montecarlo, with its bell tower of the collegiate church, is visible
for miles all around. The wines of Montecarlo are unusual in that they
use a relatively high proportion of French grape varieties in their blend. The whites of Montecarlo were long held to be some of the best in Tuscany; when they are good they can be very delicate - floral with the occasional hint of spiciness. Montecarlo's red wines have a decidedly different character to those of the Colline Lucchesi and may often include amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz (Syrah) in their composition.
