The extensive grounds at Villa Il Fontanile are carefully tended and have been divided into several distinct areas in order to lend a sense of variety and enhanced privacy.
The ‘secret garden’ is a delightfully sheltered spot, consisting of a large lawn bordered by a high hedge. The garden has easy chairs and low tables, an invitation to read during the day and sit under the Mediterranean sky at night.
Here you can sit and enjoy the sounds of the countryside, far from the din of traffic. The soothing effect is further enhanced by the splashing of the eponymous fontanile (fountain) in the middle of the garden.
A short distance from the main house we have built a large swimming pool (18x6m) surrounded by a lawn and fragrant bushes of roses, lavender and rosemary. The pool is exposed to the south-west and catches the sun all day long. There is also a paddling-pool — not more than 40 cm deep — for toddlers and small children.
The sheltered ‘Summer living room’ is an ideal spot for lazy afternoons picnic-ing, writing letters or playing cards in the cool summer breeze. A roof on pillars, it once served as a hay-store but has been restored and has a long wooden table and a transportable barbecue.
This elegant structure is fronted by a decorative herb and vegetable garden — easy on the eye and a source of ripe tomatoes, courgettes, salads and Mediterranean herbs which our guests are welcome to pick.
Villa Fontanile was planned with special attention to families with small children. The pool and paddling pool; a playground with a small house, a slide, swings and a climbing rope; as well as 2 children’s bikes and a ping-pong table will fill the day with sports and games. Five bicycles for adults are also available at no extra cost.
One of Villa Il Fontanile’s greatest delights is the private access to a beach of fine sands and multicoloured shells (3km). A back road leads from the villa to the private gate. There is a bamboo-sheltered parking place, a fresh-water shower and a small cabin with deck-chairs and parasols.
The breathtaking beauty is augmented by the scents of cistus-roses, myrtle and other wild aromatics which grow on the dunes behind the beach.
