Situated in the north of Lazio, approximately 100km from Rome and only 25km from Orvieto in Umbria, and within a similar distance of the Tuscan border, Il Girasole is set in an area rich with history and culture. From its vantage point, five hundred metres above sea level, you have a commanding view of this dramatic land.

North of the property is the hill town of Civita, cut off from the rest of the world, the only access via a footbridge. No traffic clogs its streets, and here you can truly feel the past surround you. The site has been inhabited since pre Etruscan times, and, like its more famous northern neighbour, Orvieto, its vantage point offered protection in turbulent times. This entire region shows its volcanic heritage in the twisted beauty of the hills and valleys.
The town is a snapshot of life in this region as it has been lived for centuries, and the long walk along the causway is well worth the trip. From its lofty vantage point you can survey the surrounding land and admire the breathtaking vistas.
The provincial capital of Viterbo is only 26km away, called the "City of the Popes", it was a major episcopal centre and played host to a succession of Popes in its Papal palace. During the thirteenth century it was one of the wealthiest and most powerful cities in Italy, conquering the surrounding lands and negociating with both the Holy Roman Emperors and the Popes. Indeed, the city even kidnapped the College of Cardinals in an attempt to get their own man elected Pope! The town is more sedate now but the past can still be seen in its amazing buildings; the San Pellegrino district is mostly unchanged from the thirteenth century.
The nearest town for amenities and shops is Vetriolo, which is approximately 1km from the house.
