The ancient town of Cagli is graced with a stunning backdrop of some of the highest peaks in the Marches. Its graceful mediæval buildings still conform to the Roman grid plan of its original founders. It was once an important staging post on the Via Flammina, the most important Roman road in Europe, and has been a regular stop off for travelers for over two thousand years. In the central Piazza there stands an impressive oval torrione, or tower, built by the Sienese Renaissance architect and artist Francesco di Giorgio Martini - it is all that remains of the imposing citadel built by the 15th century Duke Federico da Montefeltro. Although the town is rich in things to see and do the obvious star is the surrounding countryside. Some of the highest peaks in the Marches ring the town with roads that snake up through meadows and stands of trees - breath-taking views await you from the flanks of Monte Petrano (1108m), Monte Catria (1700m) and Monte Acuto (1527m). It is in this stunning setting that you will find Torre di Sasso - built around a 15th century watch tower, this country retreat just outside the town of Cagli is guaranteed to provide a relaxing base for your stay in the Marches.
