Although Chiaviari is an important tourist harbour along the east coast of Genoa, it maintains its own characteristics as a busy working village. Its borgo, the core of the old village, was founded in the 12th Century at the mouth of the river Entella, by the Republic of Genoa. Its Middle Age origins are still very apparent in its castle remains and in its arcades flanking the streets parallel to the coast and crossed by many narrow lanes called vicoli.

Between the 17th and 18th centuries Chivari enhanced its power and appearance with noble families and the palazzos. Most of the present core of the town dates from the 19th century. The present main street (Via Martiri della Liberazione) is called Caruggio dritto (straight way) by the locals, and crosses the entire town centre from east to west. Its arcades are packed with traditional little shops and an outdoor antiques market which takes place every two weeks. Chiavari is known for the production of its straw-bottomed chairs, known as campanine or chiavarine.
