And just south of your accommodation lies the town of La Spezia, sitting at the head of the Poet's Gulf, a lovely extended bay. Poets enchanted by the gulf include Petrarch, Shelley, Byron and DH Lawrence. La Spezia was once a busy port and naval centre, bustling rather than beautiful, but now has the marvellous Museo Amedeo Lia, a terrific collection of Renaissance and mediaeval art. You'll find good restaurants and bars here too.
