You’ll find the hotel easily accessible by train or car, and the closest airports are at Genoa and Pisa – your hosts will be happy to provide you with detailed directions.
Nearby, you’ll find ferry-boats to the Cinque Terre, Portovenere and the Gulf of Tigullio. The hotel staff are happy to arrange your ferry bookings. You’ll also find hire of mountain bikes, canoe, dinghies, wind surfers, surfboards and scooters. There is a football pitch, squash courts, and scuba instruction near the hotel.
The ferries are a terrific way to admire the vineyards which go down to the sea, and the little villages clinging to the rocks; or you can reach Portovenere and Lerici to the east, or the Gulf of Tigullio and Portofino in the west. Hotel manager Damiano charters the boats, and organises a variety of excursions … maybe combined with fireworks, with an aperitif during sunset, or with a dinner on the coast.
You have to see the extraordinary run of coastal mountain villages of the Cinque Terre. The ‘five lands’ are wedged into a series of coves between precipitous cliffs. Remote, yet dramatically situated on a stunning coastline they are well worth a trip. Portovenere, meanwhile, is an age-old, narrow-laned village sitting atop a strip of land pushing out into ‘Byron’s Bay’. You enter through a twelfth century gate built by the Genoese; within lies a sparkling terrace of pink- and yellow-painted houses, which once formed the town’s defensive wall. The views across to the Cinque Terre from here are marvellous.
Lerici is a lovely resort of villas, waterfront bars and trattorie, while Portofino is a beautiful spot to visit. Hidden in a secluded inlet, within slopes of olive groves and cypress trees, this has been a magnet for the glitterati since the Dolce Vita days of Loren, Bogart, Bacall, Burton and Taylor. All holidayed here.
