The Hotel Nazionale allies 21st century comforts to a style harking back to the dawn of the 1900s.
Traditional Ligurian fare in the restaurant, easy access around the region by train, idyllic boat trips and delightful walks make this the perfect holiday base. And from here you can quickly reach the fishing ports of the Cinque Terre.
Lying in the grand sweep of the Ligurian coastline between the Cinque Terre and Portofino, Levanto nestles in a deep natural bay with a wide, fine sandy beach. An amphitheatre of hills encloses a deep valley, covered with olive groves and dotted with tiny villages and clusters of houses. This contrast of sea and hills gives the town a two-fold character, and this is reflected in the local cuisine, which uses both fish and vegetables.
From Levanto, the Italian Alpine Club (CAI) red walking route Number 1 links Levanto to the ancient fortified town of Portovenere, on the extreme west point of the gulf of La Spezia; this follows ancient Etruscan and Roman pathways along a high ridge providing spectacular views of the coast.
Just around the headland from Levanto is the first village of the Cinque Terre and from here the blue (CAI) Coastal route Number 2 leads you one by one through the other four villages. Trips by boat, train or on foot allow you to enjoy the magnificent rocky coastline which plummets into the sea. Tiny villages cling to the cliffs or are wedged into ravines, and the vegetation grows down to the sea, desperately seeking the scarce patches of fertile soil almost lapped by the waves. This is an area of dramatic, rugged and swiftly contrasting beauty.
