Between Camogli and Portofino, a delightful bay opens out, reachable only on foot or by boat. This is San Fruttuoso of Capodimonte, at the end of which is the beautiful abbey, now carefully restored. It is a place unique in Italy, by virtue both of nature and history: in the beginning a Benedictine abbey, then a den of pirates, and then belonging for centuries to the princes of Doria. In the waters at the entrance of the bay, 17 metres down, is the statue of Christ of Abysses. You can dive down to see it or admire from the surface if the water is clear. Every year at the end of August, there is the anniversary of the laying of the statue in the sea. The blessing of water, the torch-lit procession, scuba divers placing a laurel wreath on the image of Christ, while Mass celebrated on the foreshore – one of the great ceremonies of Italy.

Light, brilliant, delicate, strong colours. Few other places in Italy provide such harmonious colours as Portofino. In the Fifties and Sixties, Portofino became one of the symbols of the dolce vita. Hollywood stars, big names in art, politics and industry meet here. And yet Portofino is a lovely village, with a little piazza and the villas hidden between the olive-trees.

Portovenere, meanwhile, is a picturesque 12th century town, with Genoese buildings that maintain their medieval charm. There is the Genoese Castle. The Church of St. Lorenzo (consecrated in 1130) contains outstanding works of art (there is a marble altarpiece ascribed to Mino da Fiesole). The sacristy has wonderful Arab-Phoenician and Byzantine ivory cases. At the end of the promontory is the ancient Church of St. Peter, dating back to the sixth century. You can easily make day trips to Portovenere from your seaside bedsit and holiday apartment rentals between The Cinque Terre and Portofino, Liguria. From Porto Venere you can travel by sea, to the island of Palmaria, to Tino (with the remains of the Monastery of St. Venerio) and to Tinetto (with its fifth century church). Palmaria has a wonderful natural park with beaches and rocks and lovely for walks.
