Lombardy (Lombardia) encompasses Milan, the economic capital of Italy, and is the wealthiest and most densely populated part of Italy, but, as a region, it is also rich in heritage, art, natural beauty and architectural treasures.
The region occupies a large area of the Po Valley, is bordered to the north by the Alps and excellent skiing country, and contains Lakes Maggiore, Varese, lseo, Como and the northern part of Lake Garda. There are also large areas of natural beauty, notably the Stelvio National Park.
Lombardy was the cradle of the Romanesque style of architecture, of which you'll find beautiful examples in most of the major cities, with the most striking monument of the Gothic period being Milan Cathedral.
The Renaissance period left many splendid palaces, fine churches and great works of art, especially in the Lombard cities of Mantua, Pavia and Cremona.
