And while you're here? A trip on the hourly ferry from Iseo town takes you onto the lake and to Monte Isola. This big island is great for walking and for views across Lago Iseo. Or you can follow the River Oglio from where it flows into the head of the lake, running up to the spa town of Capo di Ponte and its neighbouring national park. Prehistoric rock carvings, set amidst beautiful countryside, make for a fascinating day out. Maybe visit Garda and the rest of the Lakes.

Head west and there is skiing in the Bergamo Alps, and the fascinating city of Bergamo itself. A town with a split personality, Bergamo Basso is the modern town, while Bergamo Alto clings to the hillside, soaring 1200 feet above the plains of Lombardy below. Lovely winding lanes, fresh mountain air and a relaxed pace of life make this a marvellous place to visit (and a favoured retreat for weekending Milanese). Or head south to Brescia. An ancient town, with Roman remains and a mediaeval centre, it has some interesting Renaissance squares, churches and monuments.

Whether you choose to head for the mountains, the lake, the countryside or the cities, Hotel Villa Kinzica has much to offer. To start planning your holiday in Italy, click below.
