Stay on a historic castle estate in Italy. This accommodation near Piacenza and Pavia, Italy, is situated in one of most beautiful spots of the area, and offers apartments and rooms for every size of party.

The Castello di Luzzano sits astride a hilltop, 270m above sea level, and straddling the border between the regions of Emilia-Romagna and Lombardy. With views over the hills of Oltrepo Pavese to one side and the Colli Piacentini to the other, the soil here supports a large array of grape varieties and superb wines. Currently, the estate extends over 120 hectares, of which 80 are DOC vineyards.

The hamlet that forms the estate has, apart from the castle, a beautiful church, built in the neo-Classical style, traditional workers’ cottages and the old Custom house. This has recently been transformed into an inn with bedrooms and a stylish restaurant serving local food with great Luzzano wines. In these ancient surroundings, this accommodation near Piacenza and Pavia, with its fully renovated 18th century cottages, allows visitors to reside in small, delightfully furnished apartments. Stay on this historic castle estate in Italy, and you have a tremendous base for exploring an area steeped in history and beauty. The castle and its cellars are also available for those who wish to taste the estate’s wine.

Archeological digs have revealed that this is one of Italy’s oldest wine producing areas. The wines of Luzzano are mentioned as far back as 1000AD, on a parchment document kept in the castle. Later, Luzzano’s grapes and wines were frequently mentioned as important constituents of the payments to the monastery of San Pietro in Ciel d’Oro in Pavia, to which Luzzano has belonged for over 1000 years.

The Fugazza family took over ownership of this historic castle estate in Italy at the start of this century. Wines are produced under two DOCs: Oltrepo Pavese, comprising the classic reds Barbera, Bonarda, Pinot Nero and Rosso Oltrepo; and Colli Piacentini, encopassing Gutturnio, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malvasia and Chardonnay. The more prestigious reserve wines, matured in small, oak barrels, reveal the dedication and love of the land that have made the owners, Maria Giulia and Giovannella, true "Donne del Vino" (Women of Wine).
