La Vigna sits between the villages of Monate and Cadrezzate, lying under a kilometre from the centre of Monate. And situated in the heart of Lombardy's Lake District, the apartment is just 17km from the town of Varese. This busy, very pleasant modern town has all the shops, restaurants and other facilities you'll want. Lake Como lies 40km away. This is a lovely spot to visit, with its charming mix of pretty villages, little ports, and villas set in shaded and exotic gardens; a boat trip along Como is well worthwhile. [View on Google Map]
And the huge, snaking Lake Maggiore itself is, of course, the most famous of the Italian Lakes. Strikingly beautiful it is by turns elegant, majestic and wild, with the Borromean Islands sitting within. The lake is fed from the north by the Ticino River, flowing down from Alpine Switzerland, and the waters of Maggiore change over its stretch south from jade green to a rich blue. Combining a mild climate with exotic, lush vegetation on its banks, you have to take a boat trip along Maggiore.
And when you want some city life, head into Milan, just 56km away. The affluent, elegant second city of the Republic, Milan offers fine museums and galleries. Lombardy's capital, set at the foot of the Alps, it also offers the world's finest shopping, with chic little shops and designer stores.
