The Erbaluna farm was established, towards the end of the 1800s, by Sisto Oberto, grandfather of the present owner, and handed down from father to son. In the mid Eighties, Severino and Andrea decided to renovate their farm, their father Sisto serving as a link between traditional and modern methods. They opted for organical farming which let them regain a contact with the land which had seemed lost during the last decades. At the same time they set the farm up as a Piedmont lodging, B and B plus country apartment rentals, taking advantage of its wonderful position in Barolo, Piemonte, Italy.

They gradually bought new vineyards which were converted to organic cultivation and the sales were mainly orientated to the north of Europe where good, natural products are in increasing demand. Under the farm house (a holiday farm since 1992) you can find the old ageing cellar. Here, the date, 1915, etched into the old brick wall indicates year the cellar was laid out. In the wine cellar you can admire bottles of Barolo wine dating back to the 1920s, together with a collection of annual bottles preserved since 1958, and a diploma awarded to Barolo wines for the years 1927, 1928, 1929, 1930, showing a longtime tradition and pursuit of quality.
The total area given over to grapevines is around 10 hectares and extends all around the wine cellar and family home. This is superb soil and it is in the Rocche vineyard facing south, a ‘Cru’ back in the 15th century, that the best grapes are selected for the Barolo Rocche, and the remainder for small quantities of Langhe Nebbiolo.
The low yields per hectare and the great care given to the vineyards lead to a wine production of outstanding structure and one that ages well. From the Le Ghiaie vineyards for Dolcetto and the Bettola for Barbera, strong, young wines are selected for immediate consumption, while the Barbera La Rosina and the Dolcetto Le Liste, full-bodied and strong, are left a few months, giving a smoother, mature wine perfect for long ageing in the bottle. This is done to develop the scents and tastes of the vines, trying to improve but not to transform them in the attempt of pursuing constantly changing trends and customs.

When Severino and Andrea finished school in 1985, they decided to continue the family's work on the land and in the cellar using organic farming methods, with great respect for the environment. Chemical treatments against parasites were replaced with non-toxic substances, such as powdered sulphur and copper sulphate to counter mildew, using natural plant extracts and fertilising with manure and seaweed.
And Barolo? This is the king of wines and the wine of kings. The main product at this Piedmont lodging farm is the Barolo Vigna Rocche, obtained from a historic cru of the La Morra region – it dates back to 1477 when this small area was given the name Rocha.
