Piedmont (‘Piemonte’ in Italian) means ‘at the foot of the mountains’. Fringed by the French and Swiss Alps, which define the border with Italy, Piedmont has a dialect maintaining a strong Gallic flavour. In neighbouring Valle d’Aosta the dialect is based on old German.
Turin meanwhile is an elegant grid of Baroque palazzos, churches, museums and galleries. And Piedmont has a superb (and very rich) cuisine, with butter and cream replacing olive oil, dishes based on the white truffle, porcini mushrooms, chestnuts and bagna calda, a version of fondue. Wines include robust reds, Nebbiolo, Barolo and Barbera and excellent, light sparkling white wines.
