Casa Mary (restored in March 2007) is a pretty house, resting in a residential area just 1km from the city - an easy stroll will take you through the walls and into the winding, cobbled streets and sunny piazzas of the centre.

This is a gem of a city, full of splendid churches and palaces, with numerous restaurants, bars, museums and exhibitions. The shopping is excellent with regular craft and antique fairs, shops selling the finest local foods and wines, and a plethora of boutiques, bookshops and craftshops.

Florence is only an hour away by car or train, the beaches of the Versilian coast and Pisa (with its airport) are even nearer. Siena and the vineyards of Chianti also make easy day trips for drivers.

To the north are the unspoilt wild parks of the Apuan and Appenine alps - the rugged Garfagnana is a wonderfully scenic area for walking and cycling.
