First mentioned in the year 1002, the castle is built close to the
source of the Vivo river which used to supply the city of Siena with
water.
In 1534 Cardinal Marcello Cervini, later Pope Marcello II, ancestor
of the present owner, bought the estate and modified the castle and
the gardens with the help of the legendary architect Antonio di San
Gallo.
