The castle at Poggiarello (10km west of Siena) is a striking fortification, first documented in 1100. Originally a granary for the storage of local produce, it was garrisoned by Siena against Florentine raiders. The castle became the residence of the Chigi-Saracini family in the 16th century and was developed into a magnificent estate, with a marvellous chapel which is still in use today.
This is a wonderful spot for a holiday, with a bit of something for everyone. Sunbathing or dining by the pool will appeal to the hedonists, while more active guests may want to walk, cycle or ride horses in and around the estate. The area is rich in birdlife and is perfectly tranquil a delight for bird-watchers. Cookery courses are available and the estate's produce (including excellent wine, extra-virgin olive oil, honey and vegetables) is available for sale.
This is the centre of Tuscany ideally placed if you want to see a bit
more of central Italy. Siena (Sienna) at 10km should be your first stop
a delightful city with an unspoilt mediaeval centre. The area is famous for
Italy's most famous wine (the heart of Chianti is only 15km) and is a delight
for gourmets, with wineries, restaurants and specialist delicatessen to visit.
Florence a treasure trove of art, sculpture and culture is only
45km away, and you can reach the seaside in an hour.
