The cottage is a lovely old honey-coloured stone house, formerly a peasant farmhouse, now sensitively renovated to become a comfortable, welcoming home. It stands in approximately 3 acres of our own terraces and woodland in the hills above Lucca, with beautiful views over other wooded hillsides and open terraces up on into the Appennines.
The house is built above a small river which one can hear bubbling over the stones in the valley below, but it is not enclosed by the valley sides and enjoys sunshine for most of the day.
Available for rental all year round, this delightful property sleeps six people comfortably.
The Garfagnana, as the region in which the house stands is known, is a predominantly rural one - a pleasant peaceful area in which to spend a relaxed holiday, but an area which also offers enjoyable walks and interesting excursions. Bagni di Lucca and Barga are both about 15 minutes drive away; both have swimming pools and are most interesting towns to visit. There is a good choice of shops and restaurants within a 15 minute drive in most directions.
The beautiful old walled city of Lucca is only 40 minutes drive away and there is much of architectural and cultural interest there, as well as smarter shops than in the smaller towns. Florence and Pisa are rather less than 2 hours drive away and both cities are worth a day's visit during your holiday. The coast at Viareggio is at a similar distance and Carrara - where the marble of the Apuane Alps has been quarried for centuries - is another interesting destination.
The cottage has beamed wooden ceilings and wooden shutters throughout. The ground floor has terra cotta floor tiles whereas the upstairs is fully carpeted for comfort. The 3 bedrooms have windows to both front and rear of the house. The location, although a short drive from good facilities, offers complete privacy as it is a the end of its own private track. The track is very well maintained but is a typical country track - ideal for hire cars but don't bring your low-slung sports car!
The cottage is very well equipped (open fireplace, TV, VCR, microwave, dishwasher, full kitchen, washing machine, linens provided, cookware and utensils provided, charcoal BBQ, sun loungers, and a second fridge/freezer) and delightfully furnished. Prices (Pounds Sterling, weekly let from Saturday to Saturday) are £400 from November to March; £500 for April to June, September and October; and £600 for July and August.
