Barga
is a walled medieval town with a Romanesque "duomo". It is set in
the wide valley of the Serchio river, surrounded by sensational chestnut
clad mountains with wonderful views on all sides. The house is situated
immediately outside the city walls with views of the "centro storico",
the cathedral and the surrounding mountains including the group of
Le Panie. |

An old iron gate leads from a cobbled street into a large, partly vine covered, shared courtyard with a plum tree. (The large courtyard is shared with an elderly Italian lady who keeps her car in a garage to one side but who very seldom uses it). The pink-washed old house is approached from the courtyard up a few steps to a narrow balcony. Ground floor: At courtyard level are three "cantine". One for wood storage and gas bomboli. The other two have earth floors and each has a window. These rooms would make excellent utility rooms for washing, storage etc. Steps to glass front door and old iron grill to: Kitchen. Large open window with Florentine iron grill looking over trees to ancient town walls and "duomo". Traditional shallow marble sink, electric hob, oven, refrigerator. |
