[ local map | map of region ]Marmilla, just a few miles from Villanovaforru, has been inhabited by man since pre-Nuragic times (the Nuraghi being the prehistoric people of Sardinia). Marmilla has a rich historical and traditional heritage, enhanced by the charming scenery of its smooth, hilly landscape.
Sardinia has Roman, Byzantine and Spanish remains, but during the pre-Nuragic period, numerous villages and tombs were built all over the area. The oldest, the Domus de Janas at Di Scaba 'e arrubia di Siddi dates back to around 4000BC.

The sixteenth century Parish Church of San Giovanni Battista
stands majestically in the centre of the town. It was built in the late Gothic
style and later modified in Baroque style in the eighteenth and nineteenth
centuries. The town of Lunamatrona is worth a visit to see the interesting
architecture of the period manor houses, in particular the house of Serpi-San
Cruz. Here, visitors can admire ancient instruments and furnishings which
reveal traditions of country life in Sardinia, as well as ancient weapons,
wrought iron beds from the nineteenth century and silver clocks of great artistic
value.
