Set on an 'island within an island', the Arbatasar Hotel, Arbatax, sits on a little promontory jutting out into the Mediterranean from the eastern coast of Sardinia. The name of the hotel comes from the old Arabic word for 'the 14th tower' (Arabic is one of the countless influences on Sardinian culture and language - this is a much-invaded island down the centuries). The 14th tower still stands. Centuries ago it was one of the many watchtowers standing guard, giving advance warning of new Saracen invasions. Today it is simply part of the antique charm of this lovely old town, sitting amidst red porphyry rocks which cascade down to the blue waters of the Mediterranean. The elegant and secluded building sits amidst trees and has its own swimming pool and conference facilities. Rooms are air conditioned, have bathrooms with showers, minibar, direct-dial phone, cable TV and hairdryer. An English breakfast is served each morning.
