Agrigento sits on a bluff overlooking its world-famous collection of Greek temples. And heading out into southern Sicily you'll find plenty to discover. The town of Ragusa, a Baroque masterpiece lying on two levels, is a treasure house of exotic buildings. And there are other Baroque delights, including Modica and the jewel in the crown - Noto.

As you explore the Mediterranean's largest island, you'll realise that while Sicily may be part of Italy, it's an exciting amalgam of all the cultures that have ruled here. Romans, Arabs, Normans, French, Spanish and Bourbons have come and gone, leaving a diversity of churches, temples, theatres and a very eclectic cuisine. Marvel at the Byzantine mosaics in Cappella Palatina in Palermo. Climb the blackened sides of smoking Mount Etna, or watch a performance in Siracusa's Teatro Greco, or view the Roman mosaics at Villa Romana del Casale.
