B and B I Cedri – rooms for rent in a villa overlooking mount Etna, in Sicily, Italy. A classical Sicilian villa, set in beautiful gardens of Mediterranean vegetation, mature trees … and a beautiful vista onto the sea and Etna. Dating from the late 18th century, the house has been recently renovated by the owners, maintaining its architectural integrity. This was once the house of a master of an ancient vineyard, much of which you can still see today. The owners lives in the old ‘palmento’ which was used to press the grapes.

The bedrooms face the garden and then the sea, on the first floor. Set along a long balcony, all rooms have antique furnishings and modern comforts such as bathrooms and TV. Floors are in traditional Sicilian wood and tile. There is a large and comfortable library, with plenty of books. This is a lovely spot for breakfast too. You will breakfast on homemade bread, yoghurt, Etna honey, fruit from the garden, local salamis and cheeses, and tea and coffee of course. Host Vittoria is a skilled proponent of traditional and modern recipes. And you can take breakfast in the garden in the warmer months, amid the scent of lavender, roses, salvia and herbs. Then read beneath the wisteria and conifers, or next to the pond.

I Cedri is less than a kilometre from the centre of Trecastagni, which sits on a hill 600m above the sea, in the Parco dell’Etna. This is an area of golden sandy beaches, volcanic rocks, Etna with its snowy and pine clad slopes, and smoke and lava at its peak. You are just ten minutes from the A18 highway, 20 from Catania, 30 from Taormina, 45 from Messina and an hour from Siracusa and Enna. Weather is pleasantly fresh and it’s 5 degrees cooler than Catania. A perfectly lovely spot to discover the history and nature of Sicily.

Nearby sights include the Rifugio Sapienza, with its ski slopes and lifts, plus walking out of season. You are within reach of Piano Provenzana and its slopes, also the golf course at Linguaglossa (Il Picciolo). See the giant chestnut tree "Castagno dei Cento Cavalli" at S. Alfio, the sea at Riviera dei Ciclopi and Giardini Naxos, or climb to the volcanic caves of the Parco Fluviale dell’Alcantara. Just a small selection of the host of sights on Sicily.

Double rooms range from €60 to €80, singles from €40 to €60, both with bathrooms. The house has internal parking; solarium; Sicilian and Mediterranean cooking lessons on demand, tourist information, with suggestions for restaurants and excursions; laundry on demand; visits to vineyards; your hosts speak English and French. Dinner may be arranged on request (at least a day before). Minimum stay two days, pets not allowed.
