Holiday in 3-star luxury on the Aeolian Isle of Lipari - Hotel Villa Augustus

Hotel Villa Augustus

The conference hall seats up to 80 and is fully equipped (please ask for details). Small pets are permitted in the hotel, and your hosts speak English, French, German and Spanish. There is a babysitter available on request, and a beach service for food and drinks.

You'll have a marvellous time exploring Lipari, the largest island of the Aeolian archipelago, once known as a trading centre for obsidian and renowned today as the main centre for pumice stone. Lipari was the result of complex geological and volcanic activity. The most ancient part is formed by the remains of stratum-volcanoes, which were to the west of the islands. Volcanic activity in the north-east part of the island poured forth lava streams of obsidian. The last eruptions were somewhere around 700AD, covering with a thin layer of pumice the Roman remains of the fourth and fifth centuries AD.

The Aeolian Islands may have their origins in turbulent volcanic activity, but their history is rich in myth and legend too. Named after Aeolus, the Greek god who controlled the winds, the legend is that he kept the tempests locked in a cave on the isles. Odysseus, finding his ship becalmed, docked on the islands, and was given a sack of wind to blow him back to Greece. The Greeks settled here in the sixth century BC, then ceded control to the Carthaginians, who themselves were driven out by Rome.

The islands, numbering seven, and including Vulcano, Stromboli and Salina as well as Lipari, are easily reached from the mainland and Sicily by ferry and hydrofoil. This little archipelago, though popular with tourists, is still unspoiled by them and maintains its local flavour. To find out more, and to book your holiday, simply click below.
