[ local map | map of region ]From Panarea it is possible to make excursions to the other islands by the hydrofoil service. The beautiful Mediterranean vegetation is luxuriant with Indian figs, brooms, capers and olives. The Aeolian Archipelago, with its wonderful and very interesting volcanic nature, is one of the most beautiful in the world. In the 19th century it was the destination of some famous travellers: for example the writer Alexandre Dumas (the elder) and the Archduke Luigi Salvatore of Austria.

Local activities include diving, fishing, sailing, surfing, swimming, walking, wind-surfing and more. Panarea (totalling 3.4 square kilometres) is the smallest but certainly the most exclusive and enchanting isle of all the Aeolian Archipelago, which includes the six other famous isles of Stromboli, Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Filicudi and Alicudi. An interesting characteristic of Panarea that contributes to its uniqueness is the total lack of roads. In fact the ancient mule tracks have been today restored for the use of little electrical cars and other light transport. Another important characteristic is that the roads don’t have electric light so that the nights in Panarea, with its starry sky, are quite magical. With a little rental boat you can enjoy the beauty of the sea with its crystal-clear waters and its fantastic shores, or go to the seaside near the house. The island also offers the possibility of beautiful walks in the mountains: the highest peak is Pizzo del Corvo (420 metres). You reach the Aeolian Islands from the ferry ports at Naples, Reggio Calabria, Messina, Milazzo or Palermo.
