La Casa del Sole Apartments in Sicily

Sicily's many religious festivals, still very important to the local people, provide an important opportunity to observe unchanged traditions such as those of Holy Week, and the other folk festivals of the 12 towns of the province. There are many cultural events, with classical theatre performances taking place every two years in the Greek Theatre at Syracuse, the International Music Show Ibla Grand Prize, the Wine & Food Event Cheese Art and a host of other fairs and festivals.

The important seaside resort of Marina di Ragusa is located just 5 km away from Punta Secca, and has banks, post offices, restaurants, discos, sports facilities and much more.

About 6km along the coast there is the nature reserve of the River Irminio, an unpolluted Mediterranean estuary oasis. The area around the river mouth, with its wonderful sandy beaches, is a hiding place for many species of birds. About 3km to the west of Punta Secca is the big beach at Randello, a 2000 metre sandy shore where, in the warm summer nights, sea turtles come to leave their eggs behind the woods. This is a green lung for this part of the province and is equipped with a picnic area.

The Province of Ragusa has recently been included by Unesco in the World Heritage List for its important Baroque-style buildings, and is a treasure chest of architectural, archeological and natural gems. There are numerous tourist attractions: the Baroque-style towns of Ragusa, Modica and Scicli; the ruins of the Greek city of Kamarina and its famous museum; and the hinterland of the Hyblean Mountains, characterised by deep gorges and wild Mediterranean undergrowth, and populated with rare species. Last but not least, there is the extraordinary Cava d'Ispica Park, a deep canyon with evidence of a prehistoric past life and many nature beauties.

And in Ragusa there is the breathtaking Baroque quarter of Ibla. Built on a hill, this jewel is embellished with the splendid gems of Baroque architecture, such as the cathedral of San Giorgio, the many spectacular churches and the stately homes.

Modica is built on two sides of a valley with its imposing cathedral of San Giorgio and it is famous for its culinary traditions. Finally, the northern part of the province, located on a limestone plateau, is an interesting destination for visits to mountain villages, with its pleasant mountain bike paths, trekking routes and country lanes for horse riding.

Just outside the province of Ragusa you can visit Noto, a centre of Baroque architecture. There is Syracuse and Taormina, Agrigento, Piazza Armerina, Selinunte and Segesta. All can be reached in just two hours by car or by public transport. The most mysterious and fascinating tourist attraction of south eastern Sicily is Mount Etna, the highest volcano in Europe, a dramatic and beautiful sight at any time of year.

The nearest airport is Fontanarossa in Catania. From Catania you can reach Ragusa by bus or by train. Once at Ragusa bus station there is another bus service to Punta Secca. The nearest train station to Punta Secca is Ragusa. Drivers should take the N25 highway to Marina di Ragusa then along the coast towards Punta Secca.
