Offering Sicily rental accommodation, in a coastal setting, close to Trapani, this old farm provides a really charming way to enjoy this lovely Mediterranean island. Nearby is a very pretty beach, with lido attached.
This is a prestigious wine producing farm, with tasting and sales of quality Sicilian wines, oil and other produce. Everything is done with respect for tradition. The Montalto family offer you the chance to spend a superb vacation in a traditional dwelling from the 1800s, with wooden beams overhead. Beautifully restructured, facing the sea, this estate is in the heart of the Marsala Classico area. This is an ancient estate, where generations have followed the traditions in a land of legend. At the 'Baglio del Marchese' - the historic wine estate 'masseria' over the beautiful Canale di Sicilia which was the country residence and hunting reserve of the Marchese Nicolo' Spano' - guests can taste fine estate-produced wines and take advantage of all the owners have done to make them feel right at home.
The farm looks out onto the Canale di Sicilia, the stretch of water that separates Sicily from Tunisia in North Africa. The sunlight plays upon the waters, creating a kaleidoscope of lights and colours. At night, the moon shines down upon the fishing boats.
[ View on Google Map | map of region ]This is a terrific base for exploring many of Sicily's most enticing sights – the Egadi Isles, the Stagnone nature reserve, between the salt creeks and windmills, Mothia and its archaeological sites, Marsala, Mazara del Vallo, Trapani, San Vito lo Capo, Zingaro nature reserve, Scopello, Erice, Segesta, the Caves of Cusa and Selinunte. In a day you can visit the Valley of the Temples, Sciacca, Palermo and Monreale. In the summer you can take a day long boat trip to the island of Favignana with breakfast and lunch on board and the chance to swim in some of the most beautiful bays of the Egadi archipelago. This is a land rich in tradition, with unspoiled nature, beaches of fine sand and crystalline waters, of vineyards, olive groves and a unique cuisine – tastings of local produce and wine are always on offer.
The wine route that takes you through the old cantinas of Marsala also takes you past some beautiful countryside and beaches. A luxuriant landscape of vines delights the eye, and this coastline is one of defensive towers and fortresses, and beautiful farm estates. This then is the extreme western point of Sicily facing out to Africa, where Tomasi di Lampedusa set his famous work The Leopard.
Within the house there is a carefully created atmosphere, spacious and light, with airy rooms, arranged with classical, functional furnishings. There are many antique pieces collected by the family, with the house largely in the Liberty style. With stone floors underfoot and wooden beams overhead, this traditional house foresakes none of the modern comforts. You have air conditioning, heating, TV, room safe, private bathrooms with shower stalls … in fact all the comforts of home and more.
In the thoughtfully restored ancient cellars you can now have an abundant breakfast made from estate produce including homemade jams, cakes and biscuits.
To taste the tradiotional cusine guest can use the area in the "Baglio Montalto" cellars on another estate on Lungomare Mediterraneo, that the owners wouldn't like to define as a restaurant.
