It's easy to reach the airports at Trapani and Palermo from here, both are about 30 minutes away by car. And Villa Romita is 4km from Castellammare del Golfo, a popular resort built upon a huge rocky headland, and housing the ruins of an old Aragonese castle. [ map of Sicily ]

The villa gazes 3km down to the sea at Scopello. The village is perched on a rocky ridge a few hundred metres above the waters below. Blink and you've missed Scopello, it is little more than a paved village square, a fountain and a few alleyways - simple but irresistibly beautiful. And ensure you see Tonnara do Scopello, the old tuna fishery where writer Gavin Maxwell (famed for Ring of Bright Water) lived and worked in the 1950s, writing his own account in his Ten Pains of Death.

The waters are crystal clear and clean here, extending as they do to the Nature Reserve at Zingaro. This is Sicily's first nature reserve, and is a seven kilometre stretch of completely untouched rocky coastline, with the mountains rising behind. The best way to see this marvel is from the water. Charter a boat and enjoy this beautiful wilderness; eventually you will come to lovely beaches at Punta della Capreria and the coves at Disa, Berretta and Marinella.

Head west across the headland and you come to Trapani and then the ancient Phoenician settlement of Mozia. From here it's a short hop to Marsala, home of the delicious dessert wines bearing the name. This lovely 16th century town is busy with tall old buildings and arcaded courtyards.
