The little village of Lucignano, a mix of Siena and Arezzo mediaeval architecture, with its peculiar elliptical layout, is unique in Italy. When you pass through the entrance gate you feel you are leaving modern times and travelling back to the Middle Ages. Must-see sights here include the old tower of Cassero, the Collegiata, the main square, the Town Hall (Palazzo Comunale) and the Church of St Francis.
Castiglion Fiorentino (18km away), lies on a hill from which its high tower dominates the valley. The town, of Etruscan origin, maintains an unchanged mediaeval centre and its main square is the venue of the Palio dei Rioni in June.
