The town of Arezzo is just 1km away. This is a marvellous city, which dates back to the 4th century BC and is known today for its gold working. The oldest area of Arezzo has preserved its mediaeval architectural character and is still surrounded by its 13th century walls. In the first weekend of every month there is a large antiques fair, and in late August to early September the Giostra del Saracino (Joust of the Saracens) is celebrated and jousting matches are held.
Cortona is 30km away. This lovely town is one of the twelve cities that made up the Etruscan Federation. Spectacularly located high on a hill above the Valdichiana, it has spectacular views towards Lake Trasimeno, Monte Amiata and Castiglione Fiorentino. Long a centre of art it is still noted for its architecture and museums, most notably the Museo dell'Accademia Etrusca and the Duomo, and is packed with quaint shops, good restaurants and pretty streets.
And 50km away is Perugia. A stylish and hip city, it boasts universities, a Serie A soccer team, and lots of good restaurants, bars and sights. This is the hometown of the Umbria Jazz festival, and more traditional attractions include a fine Duomo, some good galleries and lovely mediaeval churches.
