San Gimignano, the spectacular mediaeval city of towers, lies 30km away. In the middle ages, local families practised one-upmanship by vying to build the highest tower – many of these amazing monuments remain, and San Gimignano is a must-see.
Even closer by lies the ancient town of San Miniato. Dating from Etruscan times San Miniato reached its peak in the Middle Ages under the Lombards, and became enormously historically important. With its location equidistant from the most important Tuscan cities – Florence, Pisa, Lucca, San Gimignano and Volterra – the German emperors chose San Miniato as a strategic point for controlling Tuscany. Today, this position makes Il Castello a marvellous vantage point for your Tuscan holiday. With so much of cultural, artistic and architectural interest to see and do, you’ll find all the major centres within easy driving distance.
