Florence itself is a treasure for lovers of history, art, architecture, culture, fine food and wine. It’s estimated that 60 per cent of the world’s most important artworks are in Italy, and more than half of those are housed in Florence. Brunelleschi’s cathedral dome hovers over the city that was the cradle of the Renaissance and still holds its greatest works in its museums and galleries. Banking and the lucrative wool trade poured money into the capital of Tuscany and in 1235, Florence minted the florin, the first gold coin to become standard currency across Europe.

The families made rich by this explosion of commerce commissioned men such as Botticelli, Michelangelo and Michelozzo to produce a new art, sculpture and architecture, and the Renaissance flowered, led by Florence. Families such as the Strozzi, Rucellai, Pitti and most of all the Medici made and were made by the Renaissance – and their legacy lingers still.
