That makes it perfect for exploring the town - and how much there is to explore! Florence was the cradle of the Renaissance, and is one of the world's most architecturally beautiful cities. There are museums and galleries crammed with masterpieces, and Florence boasts terrific shopping, cuisine and restaurants. It's not surprising then that the city is popular with tourists. Yet with your own haven of peace just yards from the major sights, you'll be able to pace yourself and enjoy this town to the full.
Half a millennium ago, Florence was home to Europe's major artists, sculptors, architects and musicians. As the Continent emerged from the Dark Ages, the likes of Michelangelo, Donatello and Brunelleschi (and a hundred more whose works adorn Florence today) lived and worked in the city. Today, this antique city is still thriving. It has wonderful shopping, peaceful parks, excellent food, an exhilarating atmosphere and breathtaking views.

There are a thousand must-sees: The Duomo, San Marco, San Lorenzo, the Bargello and Forte di Belvedere the list goes on and on. Museums and galleries such as the Galleria degli Uffizi, the Accademia, the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo and the Museo di Santa Maria Novella will compete for your time. There are hundreds of churches - themselves treasure houses of painting and architecture. And there is the marvellous Florentine cuisine bringing fresh ingredients and simple preparation to an astonishingly high level. Or choose from the multitude of cafes, bars, wine bars and pubs, and the traditional vinaii stand-up wine bars. Good 'local' wines of course include Chianti.
We've hardly scratched the surface of Florence. You could spend a week simply walking the streets, or gazing across the red-tiled roofs of the city, breathless at the beauty of Florence's architecture. But don't take our word for it - click below to find out more for yourself.
