Walk out of your front door and you are right in the heart of town. Here you’ll find a post office, banks, some excellent restaurants, shops and a laundry. Just 10m away you discover Pegna: one the most famous gastronomia (delicatessen and provision stores) in the city.
And you’re perfectly placed to explore this superb old city. Florence was, of course, the cradle of the Renaissance, and contains within its centre an unrivalled treasure house of European art, sculpture and architecture.
Where does one start exploring? Certainly you could spend weeks discovering the city and you should plan your time carefully. The highlights include the Duomo itself. You can scale Brunelleschi’s remarkable dome (at the time it was built it was the largest dome in the world) and gaze out over the red-tiled roofs of Florence and to the Tuscan hills beyond.
The Uffizi galleries are the finest collection of Italian Renaissance paintings you’re likely to encounter: the works of Giotto, Cimabue, Piero della Francesca and a hundred more jostle for your attention. With its dozens of rooms, a guidebook and a number of visits will help you at least scratch the surface of this remarkable collection of art.

Then there is the Palazzo Pitti, the sculptures at the Bargello, Giotto’s frescoes at Santa Croce and – of course – Michelangelo’s David at the Accademia.
The architecture of the city competes with anything the galleries, the paintings and the sculptures can offer. The remarkable Ponte Vecchio, spanning the Arno and with the Palazzo Vecchio behind. Beyond, on the hillside, sits the shimmering edifice of San Miniato al Monte. Indeed, the churches of Florence offer some unexpected delights ... this is a city where tiny churches may be decorated with works by Renaissance masters.
