Almost all the major tourist attractions are reachable on foot — and there is a good bus service for those that aren’t. You can be at the Uffizi gallery and the Pitti Palace within a few moments.
This B and B in Florence, Italy offers air-conditioned rooms for rent in the very heart of the city. The vacation accommodation is simple and comfortable ... a perfect solution if you are spending a night or two in this wonderful city. What to see first in Florence? The Pitti Palace is a majestic structure comprising several museums including the Galleria Palatina, Florence’s second most important art gallery, and home to several works by Titian and Raphael. Behind the palace are the Boboli Gardens, which have wonderful panoramic views over Florence and the surrounding countryside, as well as a rather well-placed tearoom.
To the north of the river Arno (crossing over the Pontevecchio) there is a breathtaking array of things to do and places to see. Florence was at the heart of the Renaissance and has enough to keep art connoisseurs here for weeks if not months. There is some very exciting shopping for label hunters and antique collectors alike, and the restaurants, the wines and the cuisine are of the highest order.
The great thing about Florence is that, although it now snakes along the Arno Valley and up into the hills north and south of town (and there is some marvellous countryside to explore around the city), all the important historical sights and sites are contained within a small radius. Florence reached its height during the medieval and Renaissance period, and the treasures of the city are contained within this old core.
Check out Florence’s marvellous cathedral (Il Duomo), which sits upon the Piazza del Duomo along with its neighbouring Baptistery. Nearby is the Bargello, a tremendous collection of Renaissance sculptures and one of the city’s most important galleries. There are marvellous churches too, including Santa Maria Novella and San Lorenzo ... all within walking distance of the cathedral square.
Don’t miss the Accademia, and Florence’s most famous sculpture, Michelangelo’s David, or the monastery of San Marco, with an array of paintings by the great Italian master Fra’Angelico.
